March 9: United Nations Haiti
Deputy Head of Mission Visits Petit-Goave
On 5 March 2010, United Nations Haiti Deputy Head of Mission
Anthony Banbury visited Petit-Goave to talk to local leaders and
NGOs and determine how the UN can assist them in the
reconstruction and recovery effort.
The UN requested that CHF take the lead in coordinating the
visit among NGOs, civil society, and community leaders.
Accordingly, CHF presented the cluster system it helped to
establish in Petit-Goave immediately after the earthquake, a
system that was operational within a week of the disaster and
which predated OCHA involvement in the area by about three
weeks. This sort of close coordination and information sharing
among local leaders and NGOs in the wake of the earthquake
allowed newly-arrived organizations to hit the ground running
and make an immediate impact in Petit-Goave.
As part of the presentation, each cluster lead made a short
presentation of their sector's activities. Cluster leads in
Petit-Goave currently include: CHF, lead for Early Recovery and
Cash-for-Work; Cooperation Suisse, lead for Shelter; Oxfam, lead
for WASH (water and sanitation); Medecins du Monde, lead for
Health; Handicap International, lead for Logistics; and German
Agro Action, lead for Food Security.
Additionally, both the Mayor of Petit-Goave and the focal point
for the Civil Protection Committee — the de facto liaison
between government and NGOs during times of crisis — presented a
summary of the current challenges facing Petit-Goave.

Bob Fagen, CHF Regional
Director in Petit-Goave introduces the cluster leads during the
presentation to United
Nations Haiti Deputy Head of Mission Anthony Banbury.
